At the June 6, 2012 Regular Council meeting the District of Sechelt approved a pilot project for the summer of 2012 to allow for commercial usage of public sidewalks in the Downtown Area. Downtown businesses are welcome to apply for a Licence to use adjacent sidewalks.
This project is one of the high priority short term goals identified in Council's Strategic Plan. The intent is to draw more people to the Downtown area to create a more vibrant and attractive environment supporting a diverse and thriving economy. It is hoped businesses in the Downtown area will consider this opportunity to use the sidewalk in front of their business premises as a way to realize their ideas for a more vibrant operation and an improved Downtown.
The application form including guidelines for the program
is available for download on the left side of the page under quicklinks. The program was designed to minimize processing times by not encouraging permanent structures on the sidewalks. However, the guidelines are not set in stone and there is room for creativity. Please don't hesitate to contact the District of Sechelt with your ideas for business sidewalk usage.
The District offers this program without an application fee. It is Council's hope that this program offers local businesses an avenue to try out new types of sidewalk usage over the summer months.
